As many eyes watched last night's Golden Globes to see the actresses walk the red carpet in beautiful black gowns in protest of the mistreatment by those in power, one moment both they and us at home were waiting for was Oprah's acceptance speech. She was being awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her contributions to the world of entertainment. She is the first black woman to receive the award. The first black person to receive the award, and one of Oprah's idols, was Sidney Portier in 1982. She mentioned in her speech how the mistreatment of women and the injustices that resulted went back farther than our modern society, and how despite how the press is under fire, still thanked them for shining a light on the women that have been silenced for so long.
