Diva Talks Culture: Beyonce is Now the Subject of a Class at University of Texas at San Antonio

Yes, you read that right. You can now take a Black Women in Beyonce, a class offered on the English department.  According to Vogue Daily, the class will meet three times per week and dissecting each track beginning with "Formation"and ending the semester in December with "All Night."

The course will explore the “theoretical, historical, and literary frameworks of black feminism," Professor Kinitra Brooks wrote in the syllabus. “Studying race, gender, class, and pop culture theory is incredibly fun . . . and incredibly hard,” Do an internal check for your maturity and ability to handle such a self-directed course. There is no shame in deciding you are not ready."

I'm so jealous I don't get to take this course.

Diva's Life: Staying Inspired to Do Thing Called Blogging Ain't Easy

It's 7:17 p.m. and I want to put a post up. The problem is, I'm tapped out. If you haven't noticed, I've been blogging daily for about the oast month. This doesn't include weekends, I'm still mustering up the energy to add that to my schedule, but it's coming.

Daily blogging has been challenging, yet rewarding.  I've driven more traffic to the site as well as its social media channels. One challenge I have yet to think about is what to post when I'm fresh out of ideas and/or just want to take the day off? I can't lose steam now, I'm on a roll. I just need some R&R. I have A LOT going on personally and that paired with work and blogging has me wanting my bed and Netflix when I get home.

So I decided to just vent a bit. I've posted ancient drafts since I've been more stressed than inspired the past few days. Now since the drafts aren't working, you get a peek inside my brain. Think of it as front row seats to the Life As A Blogger Show.

How do you stay inspired?

Until next time...

Product Review: Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Cleaning Oil

I'm on a skincare roll here. I also hauled Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Cleaning Oil along with these items at the beginning of the year when I wanted to switch up my skin care routine. I had heard of using oils as a step in skincare routines for removing makeup. I have used olive oil in the past and wanted to test an oil advertised as a cleansing oil. I must say I did like this product.

Claims: Deep cleans and Brightens. Removes Makeup and Impurities
Ingredient Highlights: Rose Hip fragrance (not to be confused with the oil itself, clever marketing though), grapeseed, jojoba oils, rosehip oil, and Vitamin C. Dermatologist Tested.
Recommended For: All Skin Types

Final Thoughts

Performance: Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Cleaning Oil worked really well in breaking down my makeup to make it easy to wash off. My skin wasn't left stripped or overly greasy after cleansing. The pump allowed easy control over how much oil I wanted to use as well. Though I must say the twist and lock mechanism did not work with ease when I wanted to use the product. I often had to just unscrew the pump itself and pour a little oil into my hands.
Texture: Thin oil.
Would I recommend to a friend? Yes, I really enjoyed using Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Cleaning Oil. I experienced no adverse skin reactions while using this product, so I would also recommend it to people with sensitive skin as well. I would repurchase  it again.

Product Review: Simple Micellar Cleansing Water

I picked this Simple's Micellar Cleansing Water a few months back when I wanted to switch up my cleansers. I've been loving it every since. Check out my review below.

Claims: Cleanses, removes makeup, and hydrates. Kind to skin. No harsh chemicals, artificial perfume or dyes.
Ingredient Highlights:None
Recommended For: Sensitive Skin
Ingredients (As Listed on Product): Aqua (water, Hexylene Glycol, Glycerin, Chamomilla Recutita (Martricaria) Flower Extract, Panthenol, Niacinamide, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, DMDM Hydantoin, Cetrimonium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate

Final Thoughts

Performance: This product works great for getting the rest of the residue off my skin that my makeup wipe missed. It is odorless and gentle. I use it with round cotton pads and one squirt cleans my entire face. My skin doesn't feel stripped of moisture afterwards.
Texture: Thin liquid.
Would I recommend to a friend? Yes, especially if they have sensitive skin or want a lightweight cleanser.

DC Throwback: The Evolution of Diva Chronicles

So this post has been in draft mode for a good minute. I had started it as a virtual tour of the blog, but noticed my old layout, and was hit with nostalgia. This was just two years ago and the layout then and now are night and day.  I had just learned how to add tabs to my blog and you couldn't tell me nothin' okay!? I was doing it! lol

I remember wanting my site to be colorful to reflect my personality. I made the banner on Pic Monkey over a weekend (made my current banner with Pic Monkey too). I wanted my tag line to show just how fashion, beauty, and tech overlap. Since then, I have added culture to mix since I am a fiend for cultual knowledge. The site has since been toned down. I like it, but have much bigger plans for its future. I can't wait to do another update on the evolution of Diva Chronicles.

Joslyn

Around the 'Net: Kristie Wolfe Makes Tiny House Living So Chic!

This week has been very heavy to say the least. I was browsing the 'net searching for something to lift my spirits and stumbled upon one of the chicest tiny houses I've seen to date. Kristie Wolfe now owns a few tiny houses, but this one inspired by The Hobbit is so chic! There are no tiny sized furniture and bathrooms. This home makes me want to live off the grid. Kristie takes you through the entire design process in the video below.

Diva Talks Culture: ....to be Black in America

When your skin color is looked at as a weapon. When your gender combined with your dark skin makes you "look like a bad dude." When what should have been help arrived only to murder you. When lies, cover ups, and police murdering the black civilians they were sworn to protect become the norm. When speaking up warrants hatred and retaliation because your voice disturbs the status quo. When unarmed victims are blamed for their own deaths....

is to be black in America.

Rest in power Terence Crutcher and the hundreds of black men and women who never made it home due to police violence.

Diva's Fashion Guide: 5 Simple Tips for Choosing and Buying Costume Jewelry That Looks Expensive and Will Last

Happy Monday!

This post is all about costume jewelry. I get a lot of compliments on my jewelry and probably even more questions. They range from if I made it, where did I get it from, and how much did it cost. I do not break the bank when it comes to my costume jewelry. They key is to find pieces that look expensive for less!  Below I'll share my tips for buying costume jewelry.

1.  Weight

If the piece has some weight to it, then chances are it will last longer because it is made out of more durable materials.

2. Unique Design

Choose pieces that are so unique that they will never go out of style because there was nothing really like it to begin with.

3. Resemblance to Real Jewelry

Faux and real sterling silver bangles worn together.

Find pieces that will blend seamlessly with your real jewels.

4. Don't Break the Bank!

I never spend a lot of money on my costume jewelry. It's not real, why would I? However, I like for my rings ans bracelets to look like real metals and jewels. For help with that, return back to 1-3.

5. Shop Anywhere!

I've found great pieces at malls, thrift stores, and small family owned boutiques. Don't be afraid to hunt.

That's it! What methods do you use when costume jewelry shopping?

New York Fashion Week 2016: My Favorite Looks From Delpozo, Naeem Khan, and More!

Okay let me be honest, I dropped the ball with the fashion week coverage. Honestly, I didn't really plan the time to write and what shows I'd cover. I'd thought I could just peruse the 'net and pluck out what shows I'd want to cover. Big mistake! It is just TOO many designers and events and I don't have the man power. So I lit up the Diva Chronicles Instagram with exerpts from the collections thay moved me the most. I've learned my lesson for next year.  Now I'm here to discuss my favorite collections. Let's get into it!

Delpozo

If one collection dropped my jaw to the floor, it was Delpozo's Spring/Summer 2017 collection. From the eye catching earrings, avant-garde looks to the pops of colors. It was just stunning. There were so many looks I could see myself wearing.

Naeem Khan

Naeem infused traditional cultural hijabs with trendy fringed and embroidered  dresses all in bold colors and prints. The collection was elegant and very feminine. It was simply gorgeous.

Tracy Reese

Known for her beautiful dresses, Tracy Reese delivered flirty silhouettes in silky fabrics. She also offered seperates in the trendy black and white off the shoulder top , khaki pants, ans the ensemble Karruche wore. Other offerings included maxi dresses in reds, florals, and black and white.

Tory Burch

If I may be frank, Tory Burch's apparel never really spoke to me. It seemed as if I was seeing the same collection for a few years now. I was wowed by her collection for next spring. Some of the pieces gave me D&G SS 16 vibes. I still loved the vibrant colors and prints as well as the sailor chic options. I wanted it all.

That's it! New York Fashion week it over and now it is time for London Fashion Week which kicks off today! Stay tuned to DC's Instagram for updates!

Diva's Guide to Blogging: 4 Tips for Creating Your Own Stock Photos

If you are just starting to blog, you have probably learned through experience or research that photos make your posts more visually appealing to readers. However, if you're just starting out, you probably don't have the budget set aside for stock photos.
Stock photos are generic photos that many companies such as Getty Images, Adobe, and Canva sell to people who want to use them for their perspective projects.  These are great sources if you want to go that route, but you can create your own. Doing so adds more of a personal touch to your website and social media platforms. Here is how I create stock my photos.

1. Take Plenty Pictures but Don't Post Them All at Once

When we are in the moment, we like to snap and post, but save some for a later date. I took this while on a boating trip a few weekends ago, but it didn't make the main post or social media. Create a folder in your phone and or computer called "Stock Pics" or whatever works for you and place your extra pictures there.  This allows you to pull from there anytime you need to.

2. Take Pictures of Everyone's Food and Drinks

If your run the type of platform such as Diva Chronicles, where food is occasionally the topic of discussion, it is good to have some related photos in reserve. We all know Instagram food photos are popular, especially on the weekends during brunch hours. Simply ask your friends or family if you can take a picture of their plates before they dig in so you can add them to your repertoire. The above photo was actually my mom's appetizer from my birthday dinner in April. Now you can post a tasty looking dish while you're comfy in your pjs at home. You're adding content to your social media platforms without always having to 1. Spend money and 2. Be there.

3. Take Pictures of Common Objects

Like this strategically placed yet messy looking pile of makeup. This is from my own stash. Now If I have a beauty related post, I can use a picture such as the one above. Diva Chronicles discusses beauty heavily so this makes sense for my platform. Whatever yours is about take pictures of related objects in different lighting with various backgrounds to add variety.

4. Take Pictures of Buildings, Art,  and Empty Venues

Doing so can add architectural and artistic interest to your social media feed. It also breaks up the selfie and food posts. I took the above picture while in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. If you spot a cool mural, snap it and save for later.  I used this tablescape from an empty table at the restaurant I ate at for my birthday for my Netflix and Chill post a few weeks back.

New York Fashion Week 2016: Yeezy Season 4 Hits abd Misses, June Ambrose Slayage, and More

New York Fashion Week has commenced in the Big Apple. It's fall, so the fashion insiders will be viewing what's hot and what's not for next spring. There will be shows, dinners, and after parties galore and everyone will be dressed to impress. Let's get into Day 1 shall we?

Kanye West caused quite an uproar a few days ago with his model casting requesting "multicultural women only". Many black women accused him of slamming women from his own race. It looked to be all a ploy to get more eyes on his show and it worked. Diversity littered the show.

Unfortunately, Kanye had other problems to worry about. There was a report of a model fainting due to standing in the sun for hours and mishaps with some if the shoes. A model barely made it down the runway due to the heels of her boots nearly collapsing beneath her. Another just have up and took hers off completely.

Kendall, Kylie, and Kim all modeling Yeezy Season 4.

You can't win them all. These incidents paired with the collection being underwhelming as a whole, I'm sure left perfectionist Kanye upset. I hope he doesn't dwell on today and work hard to improve for the next season.

June Ambrose in Tom Ford.
Next up, June Ambrose, Naomi Campbell, and Rita Ora slayed in Tom Ford as she made her way to a private dinner and show for the brand.  Were we expecting anything less?

Lastly, Rapper Young Thug stopped a model at the Alessandro Trincone show to adjust a model's clothes. If you could be inside that model's head at that moment! lol. Trincone is the Italian designer who made the blue ruffle dress the rapper wore on his album cover for "Jeffery."

Stay tuned for more recaps and shenanigans from Fall New York Fashion Week 2016!
