Her character flew in space in Star Trek, now the first black woman on the series is flying to space in real life, or as close as she can get to it. In a Reddit AMA, Nichelle Nichols recently revealed that she will be flying on a NASA Observatory mission come September. As a surprise to me, and I'm sure many others, she revealed she'd been on the first observatory in 1977, okay girl!
She will take her voyage in SOFIA, Strategic Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. The observatory is inside a 747 equipped with a telescope to observe the atmosphere, planets, and of course Earth. It will fly as high as possible to observe that atmosphere. Here is what the actress had to say about her last experience:
"......I was on a similar flight, the first airborne observatory, back in 1977. It's an amazing experience, you get a totally different perspective than from Earth. I do hope someone gets some great pictures."
