Diva Chronicles Year in Review: Remembering 2014, and My Goals for 2015

Wow!  It is the last day of the year,  and I could not be any prouder of how far the blog has come. I've started this blog in 2009, with no real direction other than to create a "space" for what inspired me. I had not found my blogging voice and was posting anything.  Nothing was cohesive, but I knew I wanted to nurture it. Being a biology major didn't allow much nurturing.  So I was only able to dive into revamping it after graduation.

The Latest in Fashion News: Carolina Herrera Opened New Atlanta, GA Boutique and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Forced to Move from Lincoln Center

Whew! The Christmas holiday season is over and I can catch up on some fashion news that I missed this week. First up, Carolina Herrera has opened a boutique in Atlanta, GA.

The CH Carolina Herrera Boutique opened on December 16, 2014 and is located in Lenox Square Mall at 3393 Peachtree Rd NE Suite 3024C, Atlanta GA 30326 making it Herrera's 21st US location. The space is filled with furniture comprised of exotic woods such as Amazonian teak and Madagascar ebony. Leathers, brass, and raw linen also permeate the space. The 2150 square foot boutique caters to the entire family. Tailored suits and dress shirts for men, sportswear, suits, and evening options for women, and bold colors and soft fabrics for children. Read more here:.

Could Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week be forced to find a new home? Apparently so. According to a settlement reach among the city and park supporters. The iconic event had been held at Lincoln Center since 2010 and had a  contract to allow it to use the venue through 2020, but that was annulled when New York City Parks Advocates notes damage to Damrosch Park. The city gave MBFW officials unlimited use of the park without limited on how many events could take place there.  However, park advocate sued fashion week organizers in an effort to restore the park back to public use.  This may be best for MBFW. Many of the designers started relocating their shows to venues not bombarded with the Lincoln Center crowds anyway. This does put Fashion Week organizers in a bind since their event is coming up in February 2015. Read more about the case here:

Entertainment News: Nicki Minaj's The Pinkprint

So admittedly, before The Pinkprint,  I only had Nicki Minaj's mixtapes and her first album. I was uninspired by her music in between. She seemed to far off than the artist I was introduced to and was starting to lack depth in my opinion. How many times can you say you're the baddest in the game, you got X amount of dollars when you were signed, and so on and so forth. However, after listening to her latest release, The Pinkprint, I am beginning to see an entire person. This Nicki has depth, emotions, and despite her fame is struggling with family, business, and romantic relationships like we all do. She allowed herself to be vulnerable and it showed up in her music. Nicki recently released The Pinkprint movie that showcases a few ballads from the album. I love all of them. Check it out below and my favorite tracks so far from the album.

My Favorite Songs So Far:

*All Things Go
*I Lied
*The Crying Game
*Feeling Myself (featuring Beyonce)
*Only (featuring Chris Brown, Drake, and Lil' Wayne)
*Want Some More
*Favorite (featuring Jeremih)
*Buy a Heart (featuring Meek Mill)
*Trini Dem Girls (featuring Lunchmoney Lewis)
*The Night is Still Young
*Bed of Lies (featuring Skylar Grant)
*Grand Piano
*Shanghai
*Win Again

Keep a look out for my thoughts on the latest music releases that I've purchased!

DC News Break: Titi Branch, Co-Founder of Miss Jessie's, Passed Away at 45

Our hearts our heavy this morning as we report one half of the iconic natural haircare brand, Miss Jessie's has passed. Titi Branch was 45 years old at the time of her death which was the result of an apparent suicide due to asphyxia. Her death was on December 4, 2014, but reports are only now surfacing after a tribute video which included a photo of her obituary hit the internet. Twitter screenshots from both her sister's Miko's  and  Miss Jessie's accounts seem to confirm that.

Miko and Titi opened their hair salon geared toward curly hair in 1997 and started the now famous product line in 2004. The sisters named the line in remembrance of their grandmother.  Miss Jessie's gained notoriety and is now sold at mainstream retailers such as Wal Mart, Target, and Walgreens. Titi leaves behind her sister and co-founder to head the company.

Out condolences to the Branch family during this time. The holidays can be hard for those who've recently lost loved ones. Our hearts our with you.

DC News Breaks: Millions March NYC

This past weekend on December 13, 2014 one of the largest, if not the largest march was held in New York city to protest against racism within police departments across the country, escalated killings of African American men by police, and the non-indictments if said police officers. The count was more than 50,000 peaceful demonstrators. There were no reports of looting, arrests, or violence.  The march was organized by two African American woman along with their affiliate organizations. They are Umaara E. (@umaaralynaas, right) and @TheSynead, left).

Many notable faces joined in on the march. Celebs such as the cast of Orange is the New Black, rapper Nas, mogul Russell Simmons, and world renowned fashion blogger, Claire Sulmers of The Fashion Bomb Daily. Peep the pics below.

Big round of applause to the women who created a piece of history. Umaara is only nineteen years old. Nineteen! I'd love to see what she does when she's in  her twenties.  I'm in the south, so I joined the march by using my platform to spread the word. Congrats ladies, I'm proud.

Diva's 2014 Holiday Gift Guide: For Him & Her

I'm way late with this year's holiday gift guides. Last year's got plenty of hits. I may condense them this year due to time. First up are unisex gifts. Hopefully while you're out shopping this weekend, this will help steer you in the right direction. Peep what I conjured up below.

1.  Digital Cameras

Know someone who is delving into photography, or wants to enhance their photos on their website? The Nikon Coolpix L830 digital camera is a great start. It has a 34 X zoom, 16 megapixels, and a 3 inch adjustable LCD screen, plus many more features. I just purchased this exact camera for myself on Cyber Monday. I took a few test shots and I love the quality of the photos.

Cafe Review: The Flying Biscuit Cafe

As you can probably tell by now: I love to eat. I also love eating at places I've never been before. The Flying Biscuit Cafe has been on my list for some time, and My'Til of My'Til Style loved their grits so much, she insisted we both go and taste heaven together. Check out my review below.

Entertainment News: Chrisette Michele's Lyricists' s Opus

One of my favorite artists, Chrisette Michelle, released new music today entitled Lyricist's Opus.

As stated in the intro of My Favorite Thing That Ever Happened,  Chrisette wanted her newest body of work to be " One long piece with five movements." This is exactly what it sounds like too. All of the tracks blend seamlessly into the next without the waist of space called silence in between tracks. I played the violin growing up, so her latest project,  I can definitely appreciate. My favorite tracks so far are Art and Hennessy Shot.

Track Listing:

1. My Favorite Thing That Ever Happened
2. Art
3. Super Chris
4. Together
5. Hennessy Shot
6. Make Us One

Diva's Life: I Almost Forgot to Live

Okay, I made the decision recently that I'm not going to schedule my life around my job or other entities that can easily consume you. I need to LIVE and that is no way to do it. Don't get me wrong,  I'm not being irresponsible.  I've worked very hard in school and at all my jobs, but jobs will keep you from living if you don't come up for air. They will keep you in a rut. You will end of like me not seeing family members, friends,  putting off that trip, all because of work and your routine that seems hard to break. So you tell yourself,  next month, next year. Well I'm writing this FOUR years after I made those promises to myself.

I have a master's degree to finish that I haven't started yet because I'm "finding time." I've never been the person to keep from "doing",  but I've gotten so used to being the hamster in the wheel of work, pay bills, sleep, eat, then repeat that I've lost sight of what's important.  Those who were there to support you to help you get to this point: The Hamster Wheel Routine.

They've been moments where I tell myself to phone a friend,  but getting sidetracked by the routine (yet again), I say I'll call later. Later turns into weeks. Sad! Before you know it, you are existing by yourself in a false  world you created.

From now on, I'll schedule everything around the life I almost forgot to live, instead of trying to fit living a full life into a "routine".

Here's to not scheduling life!!

Outfit Inspiration: Gold Embellishments

So I'm really into gold lately. I've always gravitated towards silver, but gold accents have  been in heavy rotation for the past couple of months. I've created an Outfit Inspiration that eventually ended up with gold trickled in.

This look is perfect for fall. A solid jewel colored dress is a staple. An embroidered blazer amps up the glam factor. An oxblood tote compliments while being large enough for essentials. Peep toe booties in the same color pull the look together or for you ladies in warmer climates, a multicolored option was added. Moschino gold earrings are perfect for a statement jewelry piece.

Dress: Dolce & Gabbana
Blazer: Balmain
Oxblood Booties: Burberry
Multicolored Booties: Jimmy Choo
Tote: Vivienne Westwood
Earrings: Moschino

Stay tuned for more Outfit Inspirations!

Diva's Life: This Weekend In Photos

This past weekend I went down to my alma mater, Albany State University,  to partake in the homecoming festivities.  I didn't take many photos. I wanted to enjoy the moment and not be tied to my phone the entire time. Take a look of what I captured below.

Top Left:
Group picture of the girls.

Top Right:
The city always supports Albany State's homecoming.

Middle:

Bottom Left:
I also tried fried oysters for the first time. Delish!

Bottom Right:
I tried fried grits for the first time. Yum!!

It was great catching up with everyone. Until next time ASU!

Outfit Inspiration: Tailgating at Albany State University

So this weekend I'll be headed down to partake in  my alma mater's homecoming festivities. I can't wait to catch up with old classmates. I went Albany State University, where the school colors are blue and gold. It's only fitting that I do an outfit post featuring those colors.

I took a chic spin on having school spirit and wearing the university's colors. Instead of a school sweatshirt that many will be wearing,  an sequin sweatshirt in the same colors adds a different level of sophistication. Flats in the complimentary color pulls the ensemble together. A cross body bag frees your hands and subtle studs won't take away from the sweatshirt.

If casual is more your speed, go for a trendy pair of sneakers in royal blue. High waist jeans and a mustard crop top keep will keep the look current. While statement earrings make the look unique. A multicolored gem emblazoned cross body tie the look together while holding necessary essentials.

Home Decor Inspiration: For the Love of Travel Featuring Modani Modern Furniture

As you can probably tell by now, I love putting outfits together. Well a kind rep for Modani Modern Furniture,   a chic home decor company noticed and asked me to create an inspirational board injecting my personal style using their pieces. Ecstatic is not the word! So I started brain storming and ended up with a living room that reflects some of my life aspirations and my quintessential style. Behold, For the Love of Travel.

I live for color. Everyone who knows me can attest that my wardrobe is not bland. So naturally,  my home wouldn't be either. I modeled this living room after the same themes that run through my own home. Color, comfort, and travel. I chose a neutral sectional because it allows for easy seasonal redecorating and you have tons of seating for entertaining. I dressed it up with vibrant throw pillows.

The wall art is where I expressed my love for travel. If I did not have to work like an adult, I'd wander the world experiencing different cultures for a living. But for now, I'll take one trip at a time. I made sure every portrait was a different city of places I've been and wanted to go in the future.

I'm a huge lounger. Cuddling up with a plush blanket is my M.O. But one must have a place to store them in when they're not in use. Enter this chic chest. It compliments the home decor as serves as storage at the same time.

A yellow side table serves as an additional pop of color accented by a silver bull.  I just love the coffee table.  Like the sectional, it serves a blank canvas, but can stand on it's own.  Finishing off the space is a floor lamp that looks like it belongs on a movie set.  I think that's what attracted me to it. I gravitate towards unusual things,  and the lamp is an unexpected element in the space.

Modani Modern Furniture has many modern furniture store locations all across the country and in Cananda. No location near you? Take a virtual tour via their website.

A big thank you to the Modani Modern Furniture team for this opportunity!

Diva Cover Stories: Uzo Aduba for Harper's Bazaar 2014

She burst onto the scene and gained fame by playing an inmate whose stare put the fear of God in her fellow inmates. Uzo Aduba and her character Crazy Eyes on the hit show Orange is the New Black is one of the reasons why the show is great. She has been featured in Harper's Bazaar's Women Who Dare feature for 2014. Here are a couple photos from the optical themed shoot.
