I often get asked by family and friends about various makeup tips. From brushes I'd recommend, tips on how to fill in eyebrows, to a good inexpensive foundation. So I thought I'd curate a guide for those want the information can reference it whenever they like. First, I'll break down the inexpensive brushes I would recommend. Check it out below.

The Latest in Fashion News: Singer Erykah Badu for Givenchy Spr '14

erykah-badu-spring-2014-ad

When everyone is begging for diversity in the fashion industry, Givenchy listened. The luxury label commissioned R&B/Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu for their Spring 2014 campaign. If you are not familiar with her music, I strongly advice you to take a listen. Not only is she a great artist, she makes for a great model. First known for her towering head wraps, then gravity defying afro;  Badu sports a TWA, teeny weeny afro for the ads.  What I love about this is that she was not edited to look lighter, you can tell she is a beautiful black woman.  Check below to read what Riccardo Tisci had to say about his latest campaign model.

Hello All,

I am way overdue for this review. It has been sitting on my bathroom counter for at least two months waiting to be reviewed. So here it it! I picked up this Olay Complete All Day Moisture Creak SPF 15 when I could not find my regular Olay mositurizer. I prefer the ones in the jar as they are thicker than the ones offered in the bottle. I used up this product completely, which is the first plus for it's review. Check out what I think after the jump!

Joan Smalls for Elle Magazine January 2014

Super model Joan Smalls looks regal on the cover of Elle January 2014. What's even rarer about this cover is that an actual model is on the cover. In America, models have to compete with celebrities for the covers. It's refreshing to see a new face. Werq!

Daily Inspiration: Get Out of Your Own Way

We make plans for our future, then nothing goes as planned. We get bummed out because we have every year of our life planned out, and when the time arrives we feel like a failure because you can't check off the boxes on your goal list. It is very stressful to live such a life. I know, I'm slowly breaking myself out of that mode of thinking.  I'm learning it is great to be ambitious and goal oriented, but you're not a failure if your plan takes a couple of detours before you get to the final destination.

Diva Info: New FAA Rules in December 2013

Our kind friends at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have decided to make holiday travel just a little less stressful. It has been announced that airlines can now allow passengers the ability to use their portable electronic devices (PEDs) during all phases of the flight. Yes, that means you headphones can stay in your ears and your iPad, Kindle, or and other tablet can stay on. However, just because it is allowed, does not mean it will happen overnight. Hopefully, the airline you chose to fly with for the holidays will allow such a luxury. Read more here.

Happy flying!

Monday Inspiration: Hidden Treasures in Fashion Magazines

I actually read the articles in fashion magazines.  I pull a lot of inspiration from them. Above are a few quotes I (not so neatly) snipped from Glamour Magazine's  November 2013 issue. They speak to me and my current situation. I keep the clippings in a small photo album on my desk so I can always flip through them whenever I need a pick me up.

Fashion Discussion: UGG, More Than Just Snowboots

Castille
Castille Boot $350
Also comes in Java (brown)

UGG Australia hit the fashion scene with a bang. Originally targeted towards surfers, the boots hit mainstream markets. I remember buying my first pair my senior year in high school when the company was at the height of their popularity. Next thing you know, the fashion elite expressed their disdain with the boot that had saturated the fashion community and for a few years, the comfy, sheepskin lined boot seemingly disappeared. I assume only to revamp the brand. I decided to peruse the UGG website today, mainly out of curiosity as I contemplated replacing my very loved pair.  I was happily surprised by how much the company has grown. They are not just "UGGs" anymore. They are leather and suede boots, handbags, and flats. They even have a cute "I Do" collections for those tying the knot. Take a look at some of my favorites I picked out from the site.

Product Review + PICS: NYC Expert Last Nail Polish

Late Night Latte

I'm not usually they type to write off a product's quality because of its price, but this nail polish is unfortunately fits that stereotype. I purchased NYC Expert Last nail polish in Late Night Latte a few months ago and have been disappointed every time I tried it. It' s one of those polishes that literally takes hours to dry. Who has hours to spare waiting for polish to try. You can do a touch test to see if it smudges, and if it doesn't that means you're good to go right? Wrong. In my spare time I tried to give it another chance...again. The polish felt dry. I even did some cleaning. It all went down hill after my shower. Take a look below.

Diva Cover Stories: Kerry Washington for Lucky Magazine

Kerry Washington on the December/January issue of Lucky magazine

The latest cover release of Kerry Washington for the December/January issue of Lucky Magazine has sparked a debate. From what I've read on various media sites, many say she looks like a young Naomi Campbell (is that bad?), the outfit, makeup, and hair choices just aren't working, and some even have an issue with her smiling as opposed to her usual lip pout look. I have to disagree with the majority, I like the photo. This is not typical Kerry. She's wearing a younger, and fresher looking outfit; polished, but not so buttoned up and sophisticated. Is it so wrong to veer from the usual?

The Latest in Celebrity News: Lady Gaga Get Spaced Out

Just when we think we've gotten Lady Gaga figured out, she one ups us. She has recently announced she's undergone vocal training so she can perform.....IN SPACE! Lady Gaga is expected to perform in space in 2015, and if it goes according to plan, she will be the first performer to do so. Her show will be broadcast via satellite for us earthlings to see. Now, I have my reservations. First, how is she going to get clearance to fly into space. Second, space travel is funded on the tax payers money, so I'd be surprised if no protests ensue. We'll just have to wait and see.

Foodie Files: Pizza for Adults

No matter how advanced my pallet has gotten since I've become an adult, pizza will always remain in my repertoire of favorites. I never get tired of it. The differences between then and now are that I tend to pair it with wine  instead of soda, and I add spinach leaves on top to curb my "no veggies on my plate" guilt. So you know how much I appreciate Pure Wow's video demonstrating five new ways to eat pizza. I already spy a few I'm going to try. Watch and enjoy!

The Latest In Beauty News: NYX to Release Butter Lipstick

NYX Cosmetics is bringing Christmas to us early. They teased us with four new lipstick shades from their new Butter Lipstick line that will debut the beginning of December. I personally love that they gave us the colors of the season with the vibrant red and the deep plum, but threw in a baby pink and creamsicle shade. They are not colors you would equate with the winter season, but can be pulled off with neutral tones. Keep your eyes peeled for their debut!

Trending Thursday: Fashionable Backpacks

Hello Everyone,

Last Thursday brought some major technical difficulties, so there was no Trending Thursday. This week, I'm back with a trend I've seen on the constant rise over the years. Backpacks; chic backpacks.  These are not your run of the mill grade nylon school accessory. They are offered in exotic materials, have sleek hardware, and are a necessity for many city goers. They are large enough to house of your essentials, such as laptops, tablets, cords, planners, etc. so your arms are free.

Ironically, I came across the designer today on We The Urban's website.

Trending Thursday: Vintage Magazine Clutches

Hello All,

Forgive me for skipping last week's Trending Thursday. I will give no excuse, because there are no excuses. I'm here this week with another trend I've seen sprinkled across the 'net: vintage magazine purses.  They emerged on the scene in the 1970's and 1980's to appear as a rolled magazine under women's arms to prevent purse snatching. It is alleged the clutches regained popularity after it was featured on an episode on Sex and the City, being toted by none other than Carrie Bradshaw. This, I can believe, as I am still trying to find an affordable version of the Eiffel Tower purse she carried in Sex and the City, the movie.

The Latest in Beauty News: Ben Nye to Release 18 Color Crème Lumière Palette

Happy Columbus Day All,

Can you tell I'm on a Ben Nye kick this morning. The brand is set to release a 18 Color Crème Lumière Palette come November 2013. If this product looks familiar, it is because Make Up Forever has a similar product. They have a  12 Flash Color Case that is popular among makeup artists. Both brands are known for performance makeup, and Ben Nye may have an advantage over  Make Up Forever by offering six more colors. Get ready for comparisons once the product hits shelves next month.

Hello Everyone,

In my previous post, I told you guys about my weekend purchase. Ben Nye's powders have been getting rave reviews for years in the beauty community. Well I'm here to tell you my thoughts. First, the color Dark Cocoa, look just like that, dark cocoa. It is not overwhelmed by a strong red undertone. It is just dark brown, which made it a perfect match for my skin. Check out swatches below. Second, the jar comes with a sifter; always a plus!

Diva Hauls: Ben Nye Mojave Luxury Powder

20131014_082547.jpg

Happy Monday All,

I bought myself a little something this weekend. I jumped on the Ben Nye bandwagon after reading and hearing people rave about it for years. The brand is known as performance makeup. It caters to makeup artists, actors, brides, and anyone who will need their makeup to stay put under extreme conditions. The brand is most famous for it's Banana Powder, however, when I saw it, I knew I could not work with it. The powder is literally the color of a banana, hence the name. I was torn between two of the darker powders, and ultimately chose s the one above. Dark Cocoa is by far the closet I've come to a perfect match when it comes to loose powders, both high and low end. It is the perfect shade of brown.

The Latest in Tech: Voice Behind US Siri Revealed

Voice of Siri

Even if you are not team iPhone (where are my Galaxy users?!), you are none too familiar with Siri. She is the voice assistant that premiered with the iPhone 4S in 2011. She sounds like any other technologically generated voice, similar to those you hear when you use your GPS systems. It wasn't until after I read this article that I realized that actual people may be behind the voices I hear on my various gadgets. Foolish of me to think that someone generated it with a computer. Apparently there is an entire world of "voice acting" used for machines, such as GPS devices (which explains why the voices often change on mine), the intercom systems at the airport, and so on. Read the full article, here, from PC Magazine on how Susan Bennett was forced to reveal herself as the voice of the now famous Siri and what Apple has to say about the reveal.

Beauty Discussion: Are you Getting the CORRECT Info About Your Beauty Products?

Hello All,

As a young up and coming cosmetic chemist in the beauty industry, I have seen how organizations and consumers with a large following often misconstrue or deliver false information about the ingredients in beauty products to the public. Why is this bad? While obtaining as much information as you can about what you put on your body encouraged, the volume of misinformation given to the consumer often discredits the experts! I've witnessed members of the general public discredited the chemist and siding with bloggers who have no back ground in the subject matter.

This is what happened with this lip gloss, which prompted me to share my initial thoughts with you all. First up, NYC Big Bold Plumping Lip Gloss.

Trending Thursday: Seeing Clearly

Chanel

Hello All,

It's Thursday, and that means another dose of Trending Thursday. This week is all about the lucite. Trends come and go in a 360 cycle. Clear accessories were popular in the 1950's, I remember carrying a plastic box purse while wearing my "jelly" sandals in the '90's when I was seven or eight years old, now it has returned.  It's been spotted on the runways and on us regular folks in a number street style pictures. Plastic has come to take over your closet; from your purses, jewelry, and shoes. Check out more below.
