Diva Cover Stories: Tyra Banks

Tyra is a vet in the fashion game. Well into her thirties, she is still going strong. She recently covered the "Black Issue" of West East Magazine. Inside the issue she discusses her success in the fashion industry and her upcoming appearance on Pan Asia's Next Top Model.

I'm loving the futuristic, super hero-esque theme of the issue. Smize on Ms. Banks, smize on.

Current Favorites: November 2012

It is not often I do a "Favorites" post, mainly because my routine does not change that drastically. However, I'd thought I'd make this Favorites post more elaborate; to include beauty, fashion, and hobbies! This way, you get to see a little more of who I am as a person. So lets get started!

  • Black Opal stick foundation- This is my favorite go to foundation. At $10 it won't break my budget. It is full coverage, so I often use it as a concealer when I'm not using it as a foundation. It is compact and perfect for traveling.
  • Black Opal loose powder- I love this powder just as much as the foundation. It is the perfect compliment to the stick foundation, and wherever the foundation goes, so does the powder when I travel.
  • Ruby Kisses gel line- LOVE! I use this liner everyday! It is so creamy and SO black.
  • Black Radiance blushes- My two staples are Toasted Almond and Warm Berry.I have other blushes from other brands, but  I gravitate towards these two all the time. Perfect for women of color.
  • Wet n Wild lipsticks- I have four neutral lipsticks from this brand that I rotate between. From the one dollar line, my favorites are 549A, 506A, and 508A. From the Megalast line 914C is my go to neutral.

Politics: Let Your Voice Be Heard

Today is election day! I will not share my party affiliation and I will not tell you who to vote for. All is ask, almost beg you to do, is exercise your RIGHT to vote. Remember if you did not vote when you had the ability, no need to complain for the next for years.

Daily Inspiration: Be Comfortable With Being You

Last night singer Janelle Monae was among the honorees at the 7th Annual Black Girls Rock Awards which was televised last night(11-4-12) on BET. If you are unfamiliar with the awards ceremony's purpose, it was founded to honor black women in all fields who have been positive role models for young black girls. Janelle's speech was beautiful, but what moved me most was the end of her acceptance speech.

"I didn't have to become perfect because I've learned throughout my journey that perfection is the enemy of greatness. Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable."

Those two sentences summed up what Black Girls Rock stands for. Being you!

Diva Cover Stories: Gabrielle Douglas

Finally! The cover we've all been waiting for! After have repeat offenders on the covers this year, it was time for a fresh face. Two time Olympic gold medal winner Gabby Douglas lands the cover of the December  2012 Women of the Year issue of Essence Magazine. In my opinion, this should have been her second(or third, fourth, or fifth lol) cover. I wanted to see her face on all of my favorite magazines after her big win in London this past summer. Essence should have snatched her up then! Hmph! I digress.

I'm so happy to see Gabby on this cover. It is more than well deserved. I will definitely be picking this issue up. *Does happy dance*

Diva on a Budget: Do We Need a Side Hustle?

Hello All,

We are very aware of the current state of the economy and we have learned to adapt. Whether its cutting luxury spending, thrifting, or stretching out our family meals to now include lunch at work. We are making it work. One trend, however, that is increasingly on the rise is what is known as the side hustle.

A side hustle is a means of income (I'm referring to hustles of the legal nature) in addition to what you bring home from your 9-5. It could be anything, and most often than not, I've noticed, it has nothing to do with one's full time profession. I've read about doctors who design children's clothes on the side, lawyers who sell pies on the weekend, and a news anchor who decorates her friends houses in her spare time. The question is, is the side hustle just a means of bringing in more income into the household or is this the only way you can have that job with benefits and do what you love at the same time? The side hustle revolution is everywhere! I've read an article in Essence (or Ebony, I can't remember please forgive me) that actually encouraged their readers to take on a part time job. An article in a recent issue Better Homes and Gardens features several professional women heavily invested in their careers, all with side hustles in full effect.

Has the side hustle become the norm? If so, I'm behind! Where's my violin, or my makeup kit?
