Diva Rant: Big Cosmetic Companies Are Missing Out...

As you can probably tell my now, I'm an avid makeup lover (FYI the picture above is not of me, it is the lovel Folake of The Style Pantry), so I love to try out new produts. Well one of the new products I have been wanting to try out is BB Cream. Unfortunately, I cannot try said BB cream because it only comes in two, maybe three shades. Now I know where the product originated from and why it would come in three shades. However, if another company, for example, American cosmetic companies, such as MAC,  Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, Garnier, then why would they not want to capitalize on their profits if they expanded their shade range. When a company adopts a product, it has the license to make it more unique than the previous popular product. One way these companies could have done that, is to broaden the shade range.

This is not a new phenomenon in the cosmetics industry. Women of color, especially dark skinned women of color have always had a love-hate relationship with the make-up aisle. There is always a case of "Will I find something for me this time?" I must say I was disappointed this time around. We clearly live in an age where it is very obvious that women of color love make-up, so why not accomodate them. I hate to say it, but it will take a company geared toward women of color or an unknown cosmetic company to come along and fill the gap and the before mentioned companies will only then jump on the "they wear make-up too!" bandwagon.

Sigh, I digress.

Diva Info: 6 Things You Need to Know When Working Hair Shows and Other Conventions

While I've only been on my new job a couple of months, I have had the oppurtunity to work for two hair shows. Even though the list of shows is not extensive, the work was. By the end of the first day of working by hair show, I quickly learned a few things. They are as follows:

1. If you must wear heels or dress shoes(for men), bring a pair of comfotable shoes to change into at the end of the day. If the company you are working allows you to wear flats, dont forget those insoles!

Diva Info: Happi

Happi Magazine

My co-worker introduced me to this site today at work and I am hooked. This site is now saved in my favorites lol. If you work or  are interested in the cosmetics and hair industries here is a website for you. The site is called Happi, which stands for Household and Personal Products Industry. It is a very infromative site that gives info on the top selling product companies, what's new as far as products, procedures, and raw amterials, and even the latest info on the raw materials (ingredients) that make up the product. Whether you are a make-up artist, cosmetic manufacturer, or cosmetic scientist, there is something for everyone on this site. They even have a newsletter to keep you informed on the latest in the industry. What I also love is that Happi even gives you links to other great cosmetic websites.

Check them out at http://www.happi.com/

Diva Info: Travel Essentials

It is May, and for many this month begins travel season. Between graduations, family vacations, and spur of the moment trips, packing can be overwhelming. We often remember to pack our camera and bathing suits, but divas, some things musn't be forgotten. Thes essentials are as follows:

Bobby Pins
Our Weather Channel apps may be benificial most of the time, but we all know our friend mother nature can be unpredicatable. It is my personal opinion to keep a few in your purse, but if not throw a couple bobby pins in that makeup bag before you hit the road!

Diva Info: Are Your "Natural" Products Really Natural?

With more and more women ditching the chemicals are sporting their naturals tresses and using more natural products to maintain their mane, there has been an influx of products on the market boasting claims to have "natural" ingredients. This change is mainly due to the intense wave of African American women leaving that "creamy crack" alone and sporting that beautiful texture they were born with. Now their hair has changed, many of their products will change. What are the big companies doing about this? Slapping "natural' all over their labels as well as putting "made with {insert oil here}" on the label. Don't be fooled, my friends. Most of these companies are lying to you. Here is how you can distinguish the contenders from the pretenders.
