New Year, New Goals. Ready for 2012

This year has been great for me. I am humbled by the many blessings I have received. I graduated from college in May, vacationed with my family in July, started back working in September, and accepted an externship in December. I am still not done yet. Hopefully, I'll be returning to school as a graduate student in the fall. I have written a small list of goals I have set for myself in the new year. They are:
1. Start graduate school by fall 2012
2. Step outside of my comfort zone and network more.
3. Read a minimum of one book a month.
4. Continue to be humbled and thankful for my blessings.

Thrifty Diva: Goodwill Haul

Found some fab earrings and scarves at a Goodwill in town that I've never been to before. I'll have to frequent that one more often.

I don't know when my love for the color blue will end, but I'm guessing no time soon. I love this nail color. It's an indigo blue, a color I do not have. Love :)!!

And it was only $1!!

Diva {MAKEUP} Chronicles:Ruby Kisses HD Translucent Powder

So I've had my eye on this product for some time. The official name is "Ruby Kisses HD Set n' Forget Setting Powder" and boasts "16 HR Flawless Rub Proof Wear."

Those are HUGE claims for a product that is 1. not a mainstream product and 2. costs only $5.99.

So I had to test it out on the one foundation that I have found to rub off, did not hold up against my oily skin or setting powder-Maybelline Superstay.

If this powder can keep this foundation looking as flawless as it does before my skin's oils get to it, then we may have something here. I have a long day today, so I'm will be putting that 16 hour claim to the test as well.

Update coming soon!!

Diva's Faves for 2011: Skincare

I keep try to keep my skincare routine relatively simple. I do not hae problematic skin so I don't see the need to try product after product. Therefore, this list will be way shorter than my makeup faves list and because of that I'll include pictures :).

1. Ambi Essentials Daily Moisturizer for Oily Skin

I don't know what tok me so long to try this moisturizer. I love it. I don't not leave my face looking greasy and feeling as if I did not just apply moisturizer soon after I applied it. I apply it to my face and allow it to sink in instead of rubbing it in and my face feels so soft! I love this product and the price ($5)!

2. Castor and Oilve Oils (Please excuse the blurred olive oil picture)

I read on one of the many blogs I read that castor and olive oils are greats at removing makeup and as facial cleansers, which I can attest that they are. I more often use the oils to remove hard to remove products such as waterproof eyeliner and longwearing lipsticks. They are safe for use around they eye as well (I have yet to sting my eyes when removing makeup). I have used these when I choose to oil cleanse, but it can get messy so I have since returned to my usual cleanser.

3.Ambi Essentials Gentle Cleanser

I've been really gravitating towards Ambi this year. I use this cleanser everyday. I have gone through at least 5-6 tubes this year. They last about a month and a half depeending on how much you use each time. It gets my face clean, it does not dry it out, and it is non-irritating. I also love how the price ($4) and how I can find it everywhere.

4. St. Ives Apricot Scrub

I have literally been using this exfoliant for years! I started in high school. I love how it deep cleans, yet does not dry my skin out. I try to exfoliate once a week, unless I'm bad and skip. Love this product ($4-5)!

Well that's it for my skincare! See it is short!

Diva's Faves for 2011: Makeup

So as the year comes to a close, I thought I would share what beauty products I've been loving all year. to keep the post short I will not include pictures to the product, just their name, websites where they can be found, and why I love them. So here they are in no particular order:

  1. Revlon Colorstay Foundation: This has to be THE BEST full coverage drugstore foudation I have tried to date. I have oily skin and I love the semi-matte finish. I love it so much I wore it in my college graduation pictures (now that's big!). I now save it as my "special occasion" foundation. When I purchased it, the popularity of it had since died down so I got it for under $10!

  2. Revlon Superlustrious lipsticks: My collection of these lipsticks is very slim, I only have three I believe, but I love the color payoff and the finish of all three. Definitely plan to get more in 2012 and the price is affordable for about $5-6!

  3. Black Radiance Lip Perfection Lipsticks: I believe I have all but three(I even have the black one!) of the lipsticks from the line and I LOVE THEM! I only wish they would spice up the line with more pinks, purples, and oranges. If you are a teenager just getting into lipstick, or a woman just trying out lipstick this line is for you! They are ridiculously inexpensive (the most I've seen them priced at was $2.02 and that was at CVS!) so you can try more than one at a time. Great color payoff and they are not high shine lipsticks so they work well in corporate environments.

  4. Black Radiance Color Perfect Liquid Foundation: I tried this foundation out as suggested by my cousin and I am glad I did. I own two colors, both of which work for me, but one is realy my spring/summer color and the other my fall/winter. However, can wear the lighter one in the inside of my face being that I have golden undertones on the inside of my face, and the daarker on the outside since I have red undertones on the perimeter of my face. The finish is semi-matte, just like Revlon Colorstay and it only costs around $4-5. Can't beat that!

  5. Black Radiance Baked Blushes: The brand only has two blushes, Warm Berry and Toasted Almond, but I deem both must haves by all women of color! They just add tat perfect flush of color to your skin without overpowering it. I hate that there are only two blushes in the line, hopefully they are working on more (fingers crossed). The price is awesome at $5.

  6. Black Radiance Complexion Perfection Shine Control Primer: Now that I meantioned this product, I have to run out and get a replacement. This primer is fantastic. I have to admit, when I first tried this product, I thught it was not effective. That was because, I was not applying it properly. I applied it with a heavier hand it it actually kept the oil at bay. Now after an eight hour work day, I do get a sheen but not oil. It is white in color, but absorbs transparent. It costs $5, so it won't break the bank.

  7. Black Radiance Body Buildind Mascara: I have really been on a Black Radiance kick this year you haven't noticed by now lol. I purchased this mascara earlier this year for just $3! I already have fairly long lashes, but the Body Building Mascara makes them look bold and fabulous. This is a great starter mascara.

  8. Black Opal Stick Foundation: This is a full coverage stick foundation. It is a bit on the oily side, so I have to make sure I prime and set well. You can wear it sheer by applying your fingers or brush on the stick and blending it on your face, or wear it full by applying the stick directly to your face and blending. When I'm not wearing it as a foundation, I wear it as a concealer. What a way to get the most out of your products, huh? It makes me feel better about spending $10 on a foundation I may not use everyday.

  9. Black Opal Stick Concealer: I love this concealer. It is not a super full coverage concealer, I'll say its a medium to full coverage concealer. I gives me great coverage and I've had no problem finding my shade, and at $5 it's affordable.

  10. NYX Concealer in a Jar: Another full coverage concealer that I love, but I cannot replace because the store that sold them has since closed. I wore this along with my Revlon Colorstay foundation for my graduation pictures and the combination gave me a flawless natural look. I'm still on the hunt for a replacement. You can't beat it at $5, that's if you can get your hands on it.

  11. Wet N Wild Eyeshadows: I regretfully admit, I only own one trio, so I can't add those in my favorites, but I can add the singles, six and eight pan palettes! I wear a Wet n Wild
eyeshadow almost everytime I wear makeup. The color payoff is amazing and so are the prices. The singles are just $1 and the six and eight pan palettes are $5.

  12. Milani Infinite Liquid Eyeliners: I'm only tw shades short of owning thee entire collection and I must say I love these colors. The are long lasting which is the good and bad thig about these eyeliners. They have a sticky gooey texture that can spread if it hasn't had anough time to dry. To combat this, I immediately set it with a corresponding eyeshadow. At $6 it was eay to add these to my evergrowing makeup collection.

  13. Black Opal Deluxe Finishing Powder: This powder is still on of my favs, however I have my eye on the HD Translucent powder by Ruby Kisses. I wear it almost everytime I wear makeup. At $9-10 it won't break your bank and they have enough shades that will allow you to find ypur match.

  14. Ruby Kisses Blemish Control Powder: I have never heard of a powder that clears up blemishes and I can say that this powder did not clear up mine. That's not why I love this powder. It is a full coverage powder that is lightweight, but givs you a natural flawless look (if you don't have problematic skin). I add some translucent powder on top in my t-zone as it is not an oil absorbing powder. I got this for $5 at my local beauty supply store.

  15. NYC Translucent Powder: I wear this powder in my t-zone for a little extra coverage. For $3 it's a great buy and for the amunt of product, it will last a long time.

Diva {MAKEUP} Chronicles: Blue Lips??

So I'm rocking an unconventional lip color, as you can see, it's blue! I'm also wearing a blue and black Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) inspired sweater. I'm in a Cosby sweater phase now. The post, however is about the lips. Who says blue is not wearable? Who says?? I'm wearing Midnight Blue by T'ea (found at most mom and pop beauty supply stores) topped with the crease color in Wet n Wil'd Blue Me Away palette. I finished the look off with a clear gloss.I actually went out with my blue painted lips and did not turn one head. So if you had second thoughts about blue lips, try it. It may not be a serious of a risk as you make it out to be.

Diva {FASHION} Chronicles: Look Alikes

I recently came across a Jeffrey Campbell Lita look alike at one of my local shoe stores. It was $26 compared to the $159 price tag of the Lita boot. If the Lita was a classic style boot then I would not mind dishing out the money because it would then be an investment. However, this shoe is a very trendy boot, it is a "right now" trend. I might not even like the boot next year this time so why spend the money, right? You can take a look of the Lita at and my pictures, of course are below.

The store also had a camel colored pair that I do plan to get!

Diva Info: Diva on a Budget!

I just wanted to share a few drug store makeup brands that I love and the pordict that I like form that brand. Being a budget diva is always a good thing, but in this economy, it is especially good. Here they are in no particular order.

This brand, in my opinion regained their popularity with their Lip Perfection lipsticks (which I do love by the way), but I also love their Queen Collection line. I love the Queen Collection bronzer in Ebony Bronze( approx. $7), the compact foundation in Rich Mink ( approx $7), the Lip Perfection Lipsticks in both the regualr line and the Queen Collection line (btw $5-8), and the lightweight liquid Natural Hue foundation (approx $7).

I have tried a couple of Maybelline's foundations, but the only one I'll recomend is the Dream Matte Mousse foundation. Of course it is marketed towards thos with oily skin, but it's prince (approx. $7) is now more affordable than it was when it first came out ($10-12). The downside to this fundation for WOC is that the darkest shade can get a little to red if applied with a heavy hand. I suggest apply a little bit at a time.

Black Opal

This is a brand geared towards African American women. This brand has won awards and notoriety from makeup artists for several of its products. The products I urge you to check out are the stick foundation (approx. $10), the stick concealer( approx $5), the liquid lipsticks (approx. $6) and the deluxe finishing powder (approx. $10). The stick foundation is a great multitasker product. It can be worn sheer if the products ia applied to a brush and then applied to the face, or with full coverage when applied directly to the face and blended in. Because of its opacity it can also be worn as a concealer along with other foundation. The stick concealer is a full coverage concealer that wrks wonders! Black Opal's liquid lipsticks are highly pigmented and wear beautifully. The Deluze Finishing powder is one that I use everyday (my shade is Deep) and I love it. I lasts a really long time, I had mine for at least nine months!

Black Radiance

Another brand aimed towards women of color and one of my rediscovered favorites. The products from this line that I would without a doubt recommend are their lipsticks (byw $1.50-2), blushes (approx. $5), baked blushes, Body Building Mascara (approx $3, and I'm almost finished with my first tube), and liquid foundations (approx. $5). Black Radiance lipsticks are my favorite products from the line. I own almost the entire collection and plan to pick up the rest. I own two of the liquid foundations, one my summer shade and the other my fall/winter shade. They are medium coverage foundations, and dry to semi-matte finish. Though the brand oonly offers two shades in their blushes, my whay shades are they! Warm Berry is a beautiful warm pink shade with purple undertones, and Toasted Almond is a beautiful rust color perfect for fall.

You're Wearing What Color On Your Lips?!?!

One trend I have noticed on the blogs I frequent are the increasing popularity of "unconventional" lip colors. I also have noticed the responses to such people who wear these colors. Most are comments expressing how that color would not "look right" on certain people, or it looks "too costumy". The colors that raised the most eyebrows are purple (which is a shocker to me), green, blue, ad black.

Who says that we have to stay away from these colors when it comes to lip colors? We accept red, pink, brown, dark plums, orange and all variations of the colors except purple, grren, blue, and black. Now I do admit there is a fine line with wearing green, blue, and black between a well put together unconventional makeup look and looking like you are celebrating Halloween early. The key is the shade (except black will always be, well black) and how you incorporate into your look. Here are a few examples for purple, green, blue and black lipsticks done right.

You almost cannot tell Rihanna is wearing a deep blue lipstick. Notice how the blue comes through because of the color of her dress. It does not look as if she is trying too hard because the overall look is dramatic, notice the heavy contour and dark eyes. You can find a deep blue lipstick from any mom and pop beauty supply store and add a little shine with a clear gloss. I have both and will definitey will be trying this look.

Diva Info: Nicki Strikes Again...

Rapper Nicki Minaj has teamed up with the ever so popular nail polish company OPI for a collaboration. She is releasing several polishes all named after songs from her debut album Pink Friday. All who are interested will be able to get their hands on the collection in early 2012. I personally plan on getting my hands on the entire collection. I love all the colors! Job well done Nicki and OPI!
